We’re continuing with our affiliate highlight series, this time turning our eye to Swallowing and Neurological Rehabilitation in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

What Makes Swallowing and Neurological Rehabilitation Unique?

Our SLPs specialize in rehabilitation for adults with both static acquired conditions (e.g., aphasia post CVA) as well as progressive neurological conditions (e.g., PPA). Our team has a monthly PPA support group that we host as well as several other informational and free screening events throughout each year. We love integrating individualized therapy with community awareness events, as we feel that adult therapy services are often misunderstood and underutilized. We love what we do and the relationships we form with our patients. Seeing their progress is what it’s all about, and we learn just as much from them as they do from us!

Great Success Stories

We have a particular client who had a stroke about a year and a half ago. When he first started at the clinic with us, he was unable to verbalize much of anything (sounds only, no true words) and was on thickened liquids due to severe difficulty swallowing (dysphagia). After aggressive treatment to address speech and swallowing, he is now speaking at the phrase/sentence level, communicates much better with his wife and family, and is on a regular diet with no swallowing difficulties. He now attends therapy less aggressively (every 1-2 weeks for maintenance treatment) and even still continues to improve with more stimulation.

They Love What They Do

Seeing our patients’ progress is so rewarding and is what it’s all about for us.

Services and Support Groups

At SNR we provide assessments and therapy for speech-language (aphasia, apraxia, primary progressive aphasia, etc.), voice, swallowing, and cognition for patients with both acquired/static conditions such as a stroke or brain injury as well as progressive conditions. We have a monthly PPA support group, a free quarterly dysphagia (swallowing) support workshop (dysphagia often co-occurs with aphasia after a stroke, brain injury, etc.), as well as several other community awareness and screening campaigns and events each year.

Special Services for Caregivers

We always provide caregiver training during our sessions and encourage the caregivers to come in the room for sessions. We essentially try to train them to be the therapist at home to encourage more practice to promote faster improvements.
