Affiliate Highlight: LIU Post Ladge Speech and Hearing Center

We love our affiliates, and you should, too. They’re changing the lives of people with aphasia by offering services such as speech therapy and support groups. We’re spending 2018 highlighting our affiliates in order to make it easier for caregivers to find services for their loved ones. This week, get to know LIU Post Ladge Speech and Hearing Center in Brookville, New York.

What Makes LIU Post Ladge Speech and Hearing Center Unique

This university clinic prides itself on personalizing all therapy material to the interests of the client. In addition, all therapy goals are functional and individually tailored to the specific needs of the client.

Great Success Stories

They are currently working with a client who practiced as a pediatrician until the day of his stroke, 3 years ago. He has fluent aphasia with both considerable auditory comprehension deficits as well as expressive language deficits. Basically, his language is described as mostly jargon, and all ingoing messages to him need to be written to aid comprehension.

Their therapy approach with him is to focus on auditory comprehension first and all materials used are related to the medical field. He performs best with the material in this domain and his naming skills are best when labeling medical items.

Fast forward one year and he has made amazing gains. He comprehends most things one might say as long as it is spoken at a slightly slower rate of speech. And his expressive language consists now of real words with two or three jargon words here and there. It has brought them great joy to see his family, who was so distraught and devastated three years ago, be able to have their husband, father and grandfather back again. What an amazing feeling to be on this journey of success.

They Love What They Do

They enjoy the deep bond they are able to form with their clients and their family.

Services and Support Groups

They offer individual therapy, small groups, a counseling group for clients and a support group for caregivers. They also have an extended day aphasia program 2 times per week. In addition, they offer a motor speech group, memory group, and a group for clients with dementia along with a related caregiver support group.

Special Services for Caregivers

They have a caregiver support group for our aphasia program caregivers as well as our dementia caregivers. That group is called Train Your Brain.

Last Thoughts

They see people of all ages, from children through adults.
