During Aphasia awareness month of June many people shared with us the creative and fun ways in which they educated the public about this challenging disorder.

The Aphasia Book Club of Gainesville, Florida hosted an awareness event at a cinema in downtown Gainesville. Speech-language pathologists, Kerry Lenius and Beth Heitman led the event with the assistance of numerous volunteers. Aphasia Book Club members shared testimonials about the impact of aphasia in each of their lives. They also shared ideas about how others can communicate with them more effectively. Following the testimonials, the group watched the movie, Aphasia, by Little Word Films. This event was funded by a grant UF Health Shands Rehab Hospital received through the University of Florida Medical Guild. “It was a wonderful evening of sharing, movie watching, and raising awareness of aphasia!”, said the organizers.

June is now over but persons with Aphasia still need your help. Get involved with aphasia awareness and write to the NAA to let us know about your experience. You can reach us at naa@aphasia.org.
