What Makes Buzzards Bay Speech Therapy Unique?

Buzzards Bay Speech Therapy specializes in services for adults with communication challenges related to aphasia. Our private practice started with a desire to make a difference in our community and to reach people that might not be able to access speech and language therapy. We wanted to expand the continuum of care and provide opportunities for people to practice their communication skills in a supportive, community-based setting. With that in mind, we began offering self-improvement classes designed to help people enhance their communication skills through interaction with others. Three years later, we are going strong with new and charter members who join our program month after month because of the profound impact it has on them and their families.

Great Success Stories

We see success week after week in our classes as our members use communication skills that they didn’t think they had and challenge themselves to reach their highest potential. We watch as our clients blossom and explore activities that they hadn’t thought possible before joining our group. Members who came to class reporting that they hadn’t any friends, left making 2-3 new, true friends. A member with severe aphasia that hadn’t left the house to socialize with anyone other than family in 10 years, attended his high school reunion due to the confidence that he gained in our classes. A woman who suffered from depression related to a decline in her communication skills met with her doctor after attending our classes. When he asked her what she ‘had been taking’ to elevate her mood, she reported that it was not a drug, it was our classes! Stories like these happen often and make us very proud of the people we serve and the work that we do.

They Love What They Do

We love our members and are honored to be able to work with them and their loved ones as they meet challenges in their lives. Using a Life Participation Approach, we are pleased to be able to offer community-based services which support our clients’ desire for lifelong learning and motivate them to continue to make progress, despite long periods since their acute illness or their discharge from therapy. Every day is fun and rewarding.

Services and Support Groups

We offer evaluation and individualized treatment services in speech, language and swallowing disorders. We also offer classroom/group-based education and instruction for adults who are interested in practicing their communication skills in a relaxed, supportive environment. Our classes are lively and fun and challenge participants to use all of their communication skills to get their point across. Classes are open to anyone regardless of their skill level. This creates a dynamic environment where participants help and support one another while bonding over shared experiences. We don’t offer separate support groups as our classes encourage sharing and socialization, incorporating support into all that we do.

Special Services for Caregivers

We offer classes for caregivers in understanding communication and swallowing disorders as well as instruction in how to cue/support communication in their loved one. In addition, caregivers are always welcome to attend our classes with their care receiver.
