Above and beyond
"Editor, Daily News:
June is National Aphasia Awareness Month.
Aphasia is an impairment of the power to use or comprehend words, usually as a result of stroke, head injury or brain tumor. Aphasia is a loss of words, not intelligence. More than 1 million Americans live with aphasia every day, including a large group here in Collier County.
People with aphasia can communicate. So, please don’t speak for someone who has aphasia unless they ask for help. Most importantly, give aphasics time to communicate. They have a lot to say!
The Naples SpeakEasy Aphasia Support Group, sponsored by the NCH Healthcare System, would like to mention the following for their exceptional support and service to our members:
North Naples Methodist Church, where the group’s meetings are held; Stoney’s Steakhouse; The Parkshore Grill; Captain Brien’s Seafood and Raw Bar; Charlie Chiang’s; Cloyd’s Steak and Lobster House; and Brio Tuscan Grille.
Our group is large during the season — around 35 to 40 people. Not all restaurants will accommodate that many people during the season, including some in wheelchairs. The above restaurants also provide individual checks and superb service.
We have a fun and active local group. For more information regarding the Naples SpeakEasy Aphasia Support Group, feel free to contact me at 436-6712."

Meet Awareness Month 2008's Host Group!
The Blake Medical Center Stroke Support Group started in 2000. They are made up of 30-40 participants depending on the time of the year. They meet once per month for a social event and then also have an educational speaker during the meeting. They are made up of nearly half care-givers and half survi-vors. Age of the group varies from early 40's to in their 80's.
Tamara Spyker is the speech pathologist who coordinates the group.
This group developed the theme “Time to Communicate” and helped design the poster that was used to mark June as National Aphasia Awareness Month.
They hosted several events during the month including:
· A Stroke Seminar for the public to increase awareness of aphasia and stroke which included education by physicians, occupational, physical and speech therapists, free blood work for risk factors and information on the Stroke Support Group and Peer Visitor Program
· Held a raffle for community donated gift cards with all donations being given to the NAA. Information on the raffle and donation was submitted to the local paper.
· Provided a survey to Stroke Support Group members to increase awareness of the program and to get feedback for fu-ture activities and speakers.
The NAA thanks Tami Spyker and the Blake Medical center Stroke Support Group for their participation and generosity!

Speaking of Aphasia hosts a NAA Happy Hour!
Montclair, NJ

"Speaking of Aphasia hosted the second annual Happy Hour Fundraiser for the NAA on Tuesday, June 10, at Just Jake’s in Montclair. People came together to enjoy good food and icy cold drinks on a scorching 98 degree day in New Jersey. Despite the heat, members managed to do some real-time education of both the wait-staff and other patrons at the bar, who joined the Happy Hour celebrants in discussion, and in libation. Seems like a tradition has been created, which we hope will add to both the coffers of the NAA, and improved community awareness of aphasia."

The York-Durham Aphasia Centre
Ontario, Canada
"Overall, for the first week of June, which we celebrate as Aphasia Awareness Week in Ontario, the York-Durham Aphasia Centre clients, caregivers, staff, students and volunteers participate in our annual Aphasia Awareness and Fundraising Walk and Roll-A-Thons at 5 sites, a Dance-A-Thon at one site, and a Games-A-Thon at another site. Each site will have displays about the experience of living with aphasia, apraxia and/or dysarthria prepared by our clients, SLP students and volunteers, which include poetry, paintings, drawings, collages and personal stories. We also use the information packages and posters sent to us by the NAA every year as a basis of discussion about various aphasia-related issues, as well as in our displays."

We will also place some aphasia awareness notecards in the staff lunch room to make them aware in a fun way about aphasia and its impact on our community.
